Meet: Angela Mary Vaz

Thanks to someone in the comments on our Meet: Marloes de Vries post, we discovered Angela Mary Vaz behind Straycurls. After going through 3 posts on her Instagram account, we fell in love with her creations! She is relatable, draws in happy colors and will definitely put a smile on your face. This is why we are really excited to announce that she is next in our series!

Could you briefly introduce yourself?

My name is Angela Mary Vaz. I’m a 25 year old Illustrator currently living in Bangalore, India with my husband (and partner in crime) and my sweet little labrador who resembles a cream-puff.

How did you start illustrating?

I’ve been drawing since I was 3 years old but it was more of a hobby and a passion rather than a career. I never studied art though. I did my engineering in Computer Science but instead of taking up a job, I started a blog in 2015. Just a little space where I would write down quirky lists and tutorials. It was quite a hit.
One day, someone asked me to create a hand drawn logo for her because she fell in love with the one on my blog! And that’s how it all started. I created a pen sketch and traced it via Illustrator to then add colours and fonts. It was hard to do (without drawing tools), but it was so much fun. I got a few more requests after that one piece and I realised I’d better get serious if this was something I really wanted to do. So I invested in a graphic tablet and there has been no turning back after that. I draw every single day and it has become a part of me once again.

What inspires you the most?

Daily life. I have the most lovely husband and dog whom I talk to and complain to endlessly. Even though my parents stay in another country, I call them regularly. Ideas hit me, when I usually least expect it.
Sometimes, I crack a joke with my besties and I realize that I should be writing these down. Conversations play a huge role in my life. I love to talk. And I love stories. I also watch a lot of cartoons (big Cartoon Network fan) and read thriller novels.

How would you describe your creative process?

I maintain a Notes app on my phone as well as a cute, little planner. So, writing things down is the key to coming up with a unique idea everyday.
Once I have everything planned for the week, I begin every day with responding to my emails. I then move on to my work. I start with a pencil sketch and use that as a template to create my illustration/comic.

Do you have any advice for aspiring artists?

Not everything happens in one day. It can take years to develop a unique style, that you’re happy with but it’s totally worth it. Feel free to experiment with different mediums until you find one that resonates with you the most.

What are your three favourite instagrammers?

I follow close to 400 people right now and it’s very difficult to choose just three. But here are a few, I really like!
@britsketch Her art is so pretty and colourful.
@sandserifcomics His comics are very morbid and humorous.
@thecuriousjalebi I’m fascinated with curly hair and I simply loves the way she engages with her audience.

Please give her some love on her Instagram account and make sure to go check out her online shop!
